Q: finder and desktop not loading

A Clients hard disk got full, but he couldn't trace the files that made it full. When i decided to take a look at it, i realized that the computer after booting doesn't boot up to the desktop, and finder doesn't launch. Just a gray screen. I can't access it like this. Please how do i get in?
