Q: OS X EL Capitan crashes and shuts down my computer 2-3 times a day

Hi,

I upgraded to El Capitan recently and when I use Microsoft Silverlight, which I need for charting, my macbook air crashes. I have done an EtreCheck Report, which I am unable to interpret. I would greatly appreciate some help.

Thanks

I don't see anything wrong in the etrecheck report, except for possibly one thing: there is overlap between the two Safari extensions "ClickToFlash" and "ClickToPlugin". Are you using Silverlight inside Safari? I would try disabling ClickToFlash temporarily (as ClickToPlugin has all the functionality and more), and see if the problem goes away. I have ClickToPlugin installed and Iuse Silverlight inside Safari regularly (since my TV and internet provider uses Silverlight to play TV material in the computer), and it works.

Thank you for you rapid response Luis. Yes I am using Silverlight inside Safari. I am a bit of a dinosaur in relation to the workings of computers so where would I find the Click to Flash extension so that I can disable it. Many thanks

Go to Safari->Preferences. Then in the Preferences window, click on Extensions. You should see something similar to this (though, in your case, you'll see two extensions instead of one). You should only need to uncheck one box labeled 'Enable "ClickToFlash"'.

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.

Please launch the Console application in any one of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.

    In the Console window, select

DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION System Diagnostic Reports

(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select

              View Show Log List

    from the menu bar.

There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of reports. A panic report has a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic". Select the most recent one. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.

If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a panic, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.

In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)

Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report.

I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.

When you post the report, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "The message contains invalid characters." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the text on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

If you have an account on Pastebin, please don't select Private from the Paste Exposure menu on the page, because then no one but you will be able to see it.

    Hi Link,

Many thanks for your instructions. So far today I have not had a crash since disabling Click to Flash as suggested by Luis.

Here is the report as suggested by you. I just copied and pasted it without using Pastebin.

I am suspicious about this plug-in:

         User internet Plug-ins:

         CitrixOnlineWebDeploymentPlugin: 1.0.105 (2013-11-12) [Support]

it pre-dates El Capitan, which is never a good sign.

The panics are caused by a hardware fault, not by software. Safari extensions and web plugins never cause panics.

Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider. You may have to leave the machine there for several days.

Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional—ask if you need guidance.

If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.

Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair

Apple also recommends that you deauthorize a device in the iTunes Store before having it serviced.

*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

Thank you Linc. I will bring it to my local apple provider.

In relation to the back ups. I presume its ok to back up with time machine and

do a bootable back up with SuperDuper? I did this before upgrading to El Capitan.

It should be, if you don't get an error indication, but obviously I can't vouch for the soundness of your backups.

I was just thinking, in lay person’s terms, as I have no real technical knowledge, unlike the very obvious technical know how and ability of you Linc, and with the greatest respect to you, whom I do not wish to offend, doesn’t it seem odd that only when I upgraded to El Capitan did my macbook air freeze and crash when using a platform that only works with Microsoft Silverlight. It doesn’t crash when not using Silverlight. Perhaps my lay person’s logic is wrong and computer logic doesn’t correlate with it? Would appreciate your thoughts. Thanks
