You should format in a mac format and take advantage of the drive for mac os
if you don't use this drive connected directly to a windows computer (network doesn't count) you don't need ntfs
reformat it with disk utlilty

you can't backup an NTFS drive with Time Machine and you can't store permissions on it and if you use 3rd party tools to write to it its possible an OS X update might trash that 3rd party apps ability to work.
