Emojis now being charged for since last update

It would seem that since I updated my iPhone 4S to IOS 9.3 all text messages I have sent with an emoji have been charged for. This never happened until a week ago & I can't find anywhere within the settings to stop SMS being sent as MMS.

So this is really a warning to everybody to check their monthly bills to see if they have also been caught out. Very naughty of Apple to do this without warning, but I will now be removing the emoji keyboard, which is a shame because I enjoyed using it.

I noticed this too at first;I ALSO had two different text areas entered under my boyfriend's name.. (2 John Smith's, for example). One was Mms, one was sms. I have a 6s,& he has the latest version. Somehow, something had gotten messed up in my text settings when i did the update- I'm sorry i csn't remrmber that far back to tell you exactly what, but once i went in & reset it, i had no more issues,& can successfully use all the new emojis with no problem. However, when i send to people who do not have iphones or who have older smartphones,( like my parents!)the emojis sometimes do not come thru properly. I assumed at that point, that it was due to the age of their smartphone; my friends, who have newer smartphones, get the proper emoji regardless of brand or company....If I understood your issue properly, I hope this helps?

SMS and MMS is not an Apple or iphone feature.

That is a carrier feature, you should direct your question to your carrier and ask them why you'll being charged to use their service.

Now I don't know who to believe - it's strange that I have never previously been charged for sending SMS with emojis in 7 years of owning iphones, but after the last update I have been charged. this is the advice taken from EE's website

===============

"There has been some increased interest around emojis/emoticons on the EE network. Here's some information to help you understand how emojis in text messages work.

If you have an older phone, if you've downloaded a new keyboard app, or if the settings on your phone are set up in a certain way, your phone may convert an SMS that has an emoji in it to a picture message, which may not be included in your plan.

This isn't something that EE or any network controls, as it's down to how your device works, but it's straight forward for you to change this, for example on some Samsung devices it's as easy as changing the input mode from Automatic to Unicode."

Yes I get charged if I send a photo by MMS to a non iPhone, so I don't do that anymore. Can you clarify what 'non-standard emoticon' is. I had been using the same emoji app which a friend also used & neither of us ever got charged by our network providers; I have looked on the App Store and there are so many different apps but not the one I had been using. Anyway, to stop incurring any more unwanted charges I have deleted the emoji app from both my iPhone and iPad.

It sounds as if what they're saying is that, on some older phones, if you download a third party keyboard, it may result in the message being sent as an MMS (Multimedia Message) which, depending on your plan, you could be charged for.

However, none of that would apply to an iPhone using the built in emoji keyboard. However, you mention that you're using an "emoji app". I'd get rid of it. Use the built in emoji keyboard and you should be fine.
