45W MagSafe2 power supply got hot, smells burnt

Hi,

half an hour ago my 45W MagSafe 2 power supply i got with my Mid 2012 MacBook Air broke down. First i recognized that there was no light at the MagSafe connector, so i reconnected it, but it still did not light up. Then i touched the power supply itself and thought I would burn my fingers. The power supply got incredibly hot. After that I unplugged the power supply.

I don't think it's a good idea to try to charge the battery once more(mortal danger).

Now I have 76% of battery charge left and no working power supply 😟

I thought Apple would provide safe und reliable devices. Is there a way to get a new one from Apple without a charge? I don't want to pay 89€ for a new power supply, even I am not to blame. Unfortunately I don't have any warranty left.

Thank you in advance.

MacBook Air (13-inch Mid 2012), OS X El Capitan (10.11.3), null

Depending on your country and location, some rules may vary, and if you have a valid

concern with your power supply you can ask an official Apple Store to check & inspect

the part (and also recommend the computer be checked into as well) to see what the

problems may be. To run the battery flat is never a valid approach since those batteries

will not ever fully recharge again if that is allowed to happen.

There may be some conditional consumer laws, in certain areas, say in the EU or the UK

that may be worth considering; which may apply to your power adapter. As I'm in neither

of those regions, all I can do is suggest you attend to the matter as soon as possible so

as to not allow additional issues or damages to occur. Safety & health are first issues.

Inquire of an official Apple Store with 'genius bar' + set Appointment before going there.

Good luck & happy computing! 🙂
