Q: iMessage account "inactive" since El Capitan update (MBP9,1)
Hello all,
Recently I've been unable to use Messages on my Macbook Pro 9,1 running El Capitan 10.11.4. I noticed that the issue arose about the same time that i updated to the most recent version of El Capitan. I see that a lot of people seem to be having this issue, but nobody seems to have found a solution yet.
My problem seems slightly different from a few of the other posts on here however.
Essentially, most of the troubleshooting steps that I've found so far say to log out of the iMessage account and then back in again. I am unable to do this however, because when i go into my account preferences, this is what i see:
As you can see, none of my account information populates. I also am unable to remove the account and re-add it again, clicking the "-" button with the iMessage account selected does nothing.
So far to troubleshoot this i have:
1. Reset NVRAM/PRAM.
2. Reset SMC.
3. Booted into Safe Boot and attempted to sign into the account.
4. Signed out and then back in again to iCloud (in both Safe Boot and regular boot).
5. Removed my iCloud "Internet Accounts" account and then re-added it.
6. I also saw a few tips saying to delete a few of the .plists from the ~/Library/Preferences folder (cant remember exactly which ones, ill have to check the post i was referencing), but none of this seemed to help. I didn't delete these files completely, i copied them to my desktop, deleted them from the Preferences folder, and then when i saw nothing had changed i restored the plist files to their previous location in the Preferences folder.
Another interesting note is that when even though the Macbook with the issue is shown under "Devices" in the iCloud menu, the Macbook does not show up under "Devices" if (on my iPhone) i go to Settings > Messages > Text Message Forwarding. Here i see my iPad and my iMac, but my Macbook is mysteriously absent. Also, Facetime is working fine on the Macbook Pro in question, and iMessaging is working on all of the other apple devices i own, so the issue is only happening with iMessage on my Macbook Pro.
I'd be super grateful for any tips anyone can provide, since this is getting pretty annoying. I never realized how often i used Messages on my Macbook until i no longer could!

Hi,
At the moment this device is not Logged in to iMessages so it will not show elsewhere.
If the Apple is not used on the iPhone (Unlikely from what you post) other people will get "not Registered with iMessages" when they use the Apple ID to connect to you.
If you go to the Bonjour Account can you Enable it ?
IF you do does this seem to kick the iMessages one into gear ?
If you deleted com.apple.ids.service.com.apple.madrid.plist then you will have to re-enter the Apple ID and later accept the the pops ups about what the iPhone is using.
Whilst there are some links between the iCloud Server and the iMessages one to check the password (like there is across all apps and Services) it make no difference if you are logged in to iCloud or not.
In System Preferences > iCloud there is not option for Messages (or FaceTime or iTunes and the App Store or Developers Login if you have one). It does not even let you use the name here for AIM (@mac.com @me.com and @icloud.com ID s can be used and AIM Screen Names)
