Q: Partitioning in Disk Utility Recovery Mode

i have a 2009 Macbook pro that isn't booting past the grey apple. After lots of reading and attempts as well as taking it to the Apple Store i was suggested to partition it in utility disk in recovery mode. Now my encrypted HD is showing that it is empty. Did that earase all my data?

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)

I Will add that my main HD says that 240 out of 250 gb is used. so I'm hopeful I didn't but would like feedback

The only risk of partitioning your hard drive is data loss.
Before partitioning your drive or resizing a partition, ensure you do a full backup.
