The problem is that the current version of iTunes is 12.3.3.  You have a very old OS X version which cannot be updated to this version of iTunes.

Update your MacBook Pro to OS X El Capitan.

Upgrade to OS X El Capitan - Apple Support

Then you can use iTunes 12.3.3.

You may say "my iPhone 5 works ...".  Don't think that way.  Use the current iTunes, and consider yourself lucky the iPhone 5 works with the obsolete iTunes.

Excellent.  Good luck.  You're taking quite a leap with OS X versions if your profile is correct (at the bottom of your original post).

It says you're running OS X 10.6.8.  The current El Capitan is OS X 10.11.4.  So it's been about five years since your Snow Leopard version was current.

You'll find some significant changes, such as a new Photos app (instead of iPhoto), the introduction of Notification Center, and iBooks now housing books instead of iTunes.

    Again, good luck.
