How do I change my email address and keep my apple id on imac and macbook pro

iMac, OS X El Capitan (10.11.3)

It's an Apple ID, not your email address so change it (in real life) and then change the address that Apple have as your contact address. (You may have already done this part)

so, when I want to send an email I get a pop-up that says: This Mac isn't connected to iCloud because of a problem with ... old email address..
Open iCloud preferences to fix this problem. When I open IC preferences, it wants me to enter apple id for my old address, when I do, it spins out until eventually I force quit.
