Q: backup error "Attempting to copy to the disk "C:\" failed. An unknown error occurred (-54)."

When syncing iPhone 6 running iOS 9.3.1 I get the following error message: "Attempting to copy to the disk "C:\" failed. An unknown error occurred (-54)."

I am running iTunes 12.3.3.17 on a Windows 7 Pro 64bit laptop. I am logged in as Administrator. The laptop has 8GB RAM and 700+GB HD space available.

It appears to be syncing contacts and calendar properly but the local backup fails.

Does anyone have a solution for this?

Thanks for your help.

    Hi,

I ran into this same error today. I don't know if this will help, but you might want to try it before going through all the re-routing etc. I'm running 9.3.1 on my iPhone 6s.

I have the Kindle app on my iPhone. And I recently used it to "check out" a few ebooks from my local library. As they're library ebooks . . . they can't legally be backed up to my computer and so the iPhone was stumbling over them. I received the same error message and then it just hung there forever. I deleted the Kindle app from my phone, tried again, and everything worked just fine. I then re-downloaded the Kindle app and signed back in. I would imagine if you were a member of Kindle Unlimited and had those ebooks on your Kindle app, it might respond the same way. I'm guessing same thing would hold true for the iPad, iPod etc.

    Hope this helps someone!
