Q: Battery Fried From Plane Ride (It even rhymes!)

Hey all,

I have a problem with my battery. Everything was working fine until about a month ago. I took my laptop on the plane with me and once I landed it started acting strangely. Initial problems:

1. The battery seemed to drain incredibly quickly;

2. The battery would jump down percentages. For example. It would show 55% then jump to 35%.

3. Once under half way, the computer could just turn off, regardless of the battery percentage shown.

That continued for a few weeks but it got worse to the point where, if unplugged, the computer could turn off at almost any point randomly. A few days ago, the laptop started turning off if the power source was removed, even for a split second. I have just looked at the hardware and I get this readout:

After looking through these forums, I tried an SMC reset. Until then, the battery showed it was 100% fully charged the entire time. Since doing the SMC reset, the battery went to 0% and is now charging. However, it still shows in that readout that the battery is not charging  and that it is fully charged so I'm a little confused. The computer is out of warranty so it would be great to get an idea of what could have happened on a plane ride that could have caused this? Can altitude or the scanners fry the battery somehow?

Thanks heaps!

MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Late 2013), OS X Yosemite (10.10.5)

    I doubt the airplane ride caused this.  Either way, you should take it to an Apple Store to see how much it costs to replace.

    "Cycle Count: 451"

    Depends on the exact model of your Macbook Pro, check the maximum cycle count >  Determining battery cycle count for Mac notebooks - Apple Support

    Thanks for the link. Mine should have a max cycle count of 1000.

    1000 counts is "expected", not always reality.  Run it dead a couple of times (even accidentally), you could lose 20 cycles.  Run it to 10% but not dead, maybe lose 5 cycles.  Or that particular battery may never have had more than 500 cycles in it ever.

    As long as you got 3-ish years from it, such is life.
