iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2015) Randomly Restarts Without Errors

Totally agreed, said they won't replace it unless deemed un repairable... I'm on the same boat I didn't fork out two grand for a refurbished Imac!!!! Mines still at service center, not heard a thing yet.

Wow, I have the same iMac 7,1 that most posters have been talking about and perhaps I can make a few suggestions.

I got my imac 27 about 2 months ago. It arrived with 10.11.3 installed, which also was what i was using on the imac i was replacing, so my time machine matched that os.

i ran the update from the mac store for 11.4 and it bricked my machine. Apple support, while they tried, was not able to help and asked me to send it back. Before i put it in the box, i decided to do a full restore from my time machine. So, i rebooted into recovery from my usb rescue disk and wiped the internal drive. I then used the os utilities to do the restore. A few hours later, i had a perfectly great machine.

I made many attempts to get past 11.3 but gave up and tried 11.5 when it came out. Same result, bricked machine.

Back to 11.3, runnning again. I decided to download the combo updater directly (the .dmg file for 11.5), loaded that onto my external drive. Ran the install from there. Now have a stable running imac 27 5k retina running just fine , no problems at all. I did discuss this with apple and i am not the only one who has used this fix. There is something bizarre with their normal installer. It only affects certain machines, i'd like to hear if this works for anyone else. I feel your pain.......

The downgrade seems to at least have had some positive effect on my end here.

Just had another Kernal Panic which is seriously annoying the **** out of me now. That's like well over a dozen now, since I purchased this beautiful looking, powerful piece-of-crap mac in February. That's half a dozen more than the last 6 years with assorted iMacs and laptops.

This time, after powering up Ableton Live and tinkering away on some track the mac became unresponsive, froze for about 30 seconds and then, bang - black screen followed up a few seconds later by the Kernal Panic screen.

There is no doubt about it but this model is a lemon. A bona fide screw-up.

This is not the same issue most of us here are seeing.

In what seems to be the majority of cases here the computer freezes and then reboots with no kernel panic or any other error message logged in any of the syslogs. In your case you have a kernel panic which should give you some clues as to what is causing your problems.

Yes, mine never gave any kind of error code or kernel panic, just restarts. Someone suggested going back to 10.11.3 not sure how do to that.

I requested an exchange from Apple but have not heard back from them. I purchased mine at Best Buy in late February on sale and spoke to the manager there yesterday. They cannot take it back but said in this case Apple should exchange all the machines that are randomly restarting - he states that underlying damage to the computer is happening and one restart soon could kill the machine. I noticed mine is running slower and the HD is buzzing. About 50 plus restarts now.

I suggest everyone call Apple - get a supervisor on the phone and demand an exchange. The more of us that do it will move the needle. This is by far the worst machine I have owned - notice I am not referring to it as a computer... because it is not, it is a piece of @#$%.

Thanks for your input. I was pointing out that in addition to the random reboots I occasionally get kernel panics and hence that post. If you view an earlier post of mine you might notice that I list a number of other issues that seem to crop up in my case and in many other cases as well.

There seem to be a lot of threads about issues with these Retina iMacs behaving erratically and I apologise if I appear to have somehow hijacked this 'non-kernal-panic' issue but my contention remains that these issues are all somehow linked, whether it is flawed design or lemon-sucky-software.

My mac randomly reboots. Sometimes with kernel panics. Most times without.

I thought that maybe someone here might be able to figure out what might have caused this particular panic, but seeing as I admittedly have no understanding of these logs I do appreciate your belief that somehow, magically, it should make sense to me.

I was not trying to be rude. I was pointing out that your problem differs from the one we are discussing in this thread.

I even pointed you to a thread where they discuss the KP you are seeing.

Good luck getting that sorted, we all understand how frustrating it is to have a computer that does not work as expected.

I am patiently waiting for the Apple Supervisor to get back to me. I have been requesting strongly that they send me an RMA sticker - I send my Turkey of a machine to them - and they send me out a new unit.

It is the right thing to do for all of us stuck with these Lemons.

Mine also has issues sometimes with the external devices not being seen by the computer. I even had to manually restart a couple of times to get it to see the SuperDrive. It will randomly drop my External HD and I will have to unplug and re-plug in the USB. This never happens on my PC. In fact I have never had a random restart on any PC I have owned, ever.

I think the machine I have has loads of issues besides the obvious one of the random restarts. The random restarts are slowly destroying the machine...

Yep, I have the same issue as everyone else. I've been dealing with Apple support for over a month now. I'm on my third tech (the first two just quit responding to emails). We've done 4 different data captures, removed RAM, peripherals – all the same stuff I'd already tried. Apple engineers first brilliant solution was that it was a screensaver issue. Of course it wasn't. Then it must be my Wacom tablet. Only it wasn't. I can't seem to get anywhere with support and, unfortunately, I'm several hours away from an Apple store or service center. My machine crashes every single day, sometimes 3-5 times a day. Which means nearly 100 restarts since I started working with them. Nobody can tell me that won't shorten the lifespan of my machine! I wish I could figure out some way to escalate my ticket but I'll just end up with yet another tech. This is killing my productivity and my business. I agree with other posters here – these machines are lemons and should be replaced.

Today I hit the 4 day mark before leaving work for the weekend.

If it still has not restarted on monday I guess the downgrade really solved my issues.

I too have this error... However when it does leave a crash report mine shows Machine Check in the report.

I have tried all known attempts to fix this issue nothing seams to work... It will not recover using the recovery mode.

So off to the local Apple Store go... I will keep all informed of what they say. I'm trying now to backup using Target mode.

When I try to backup in safe mode it will restart before the backup is finished.

iMac (Retina 5K, 27, late 2015, 4 ghz i7, 16 gb 1867 mhm ddr3, and radeon r9 m395 2048 mb, 500 GB of flash). Update on my iMac. Took it back to the Apple store in Greensboro NC and they replaced the logic board. I have had it home for about 27 hours and so far no reboots. It came back with 10.11.5 already installed. I have restored from my backups yet (will wait about 48 hours) but so far so good. I'll keep you informed.

Please let us know. My machine is exhibiting the same behavior as far as random restarts but not as often as others here. I might see a random reboot maybe once every two to three weeks and the thought of lugging this thing on the subway to the Apple store makes me furious. If it happens one more time, I'll have to open a support call with Apple and schedule an appointment. I'm just surprised Apple is not saying anything about this.....
