Q: Cannot Sync iPod Touch to iTunes, Permanently Deleting Apps

Hi,

I have an iPod Touch 5G. I have deleted multiple apps off of my iPod Touch, but they are not completely removed. I know that to delete the app from the home screen (also causing it to lose all data), you must hold the icon until it wiggles, then click the "X" in the corner and choose to delete it. However, this does not actually remove the app completely, which is what I'm trying to do.

I've read that to delete it, you must connect your device to your laptop with a USB cord, then add your device (in this case, my iPod Touch) to iTunes (unless you've already added it, but I didn't have it added yet).

This is where my problem comes in. I have a Windows laptop, and I know that iTunes is a bit different on Windows than on Mac. As soon as I added my iPod Touch to iTunes on my computer, it gave me the opportunity to back up my data from my iPod Touch to my laptop, which I did, just so that I could have my data backed up.

I read that to permanently delete those apps, you must go to the "Apps" section in iTunes on your laptop, and delete those apps from there. However, I cannot seem to get those apps to show.

There isn't anything there. I clicked to sync my iPod Touch to iTunes. It loads a bit, acting like it's syncing, but then a message pops up saying that my iPod Touch cannot be synced, and that an unknown error has occurred, followed by (-54). I looked up the error and found this:

If you see error -54 when you sync with iTunes - Apple Support

However, the page was not helpful.

I heard that to sync correctly, you must use an Apple USB cord, which I am not using. I wasn't sure if this was true (a friend told me, but they don't know much about this, so I wasn't sure whether to believe them or not).

So my problems are:

1. The apps won't show up in iTunes on my laptop

2. The syncing error occurs when I try to sync my iPod Touch to my laptop.

I actually have some problems with muffled sound (not what this post is about), and I got help. I cleaned out the speakers and it didn't help, so I was told to reset my iPod Touch. However, I was too afraid that I would lose something I needed, so I ended up not doing anything, just using headphones (because the sound isn't muffled that way). Now that I have everything backed up to my laptop (and I can see it), I'm considering doing a reset for the sound, but also to see if it will help this problem, too, somehow (I'm not sure how, but I have a feeling that if I "started over" it might help).

I am updated to the latest versions of everything, so I don't need to make any updates (that I am aware of).

Am I missing something really obvious?

Sorry, but there are a couple of things that I think you may have been misinformed about:

    1.     When you delete an app from your device by pressing until the icon wiggles, then clicking on the "x", it is completely deleted from that device.

    2.     All purchases you make from the iTunes or App Store are permanently a part of your purchase history, and there is no way to completely delete them from that history.

    3.     All of your purchased apps show up in iTunes when you open iTunes, and click on the App option, then on the "My Apps" tab:

If you want to hide apps, you can, but you cannot permanently delete them from your account: Hide and unhide purchases in iTunes or iBooks on your Mac or PC - Apple Support

However, if all you are trying to do is completely remove it from your device, then clicking on the "x" on the wiggling icon will do it completely.

    Cheers,
