You will need an app from whatever TV channel you want to watch. I have several European channels on the iPad. Once you have that, depending on your iPad and TV models (if your TV has HDMI ports), you will need a lightning to HDMI adapter. Or it could be older and have different ports, so then you get an adapter for that.

In any case, once you have the app on the iPad and the adapter to plug it into the TV, set your TV to the port where your iPad is plugged in and you can choose what you want to watch from the iPad: your iPad screen will be displayed on the TV screen.

BBC iPlayer won't work outside of the U.K. I thought? In the USA there is an app for BBC America, and NBC, ABC, etc have their own apps. If you get internet via your TV service provider (e.g. AT&T UVerse), you often can have access to your TV service over your internet at home with the service providers app. There are also subscription services like Hulu available through their Hulu app.

Most free offerings are only available after their on-air data (I think ABC delays their app releases by 7 days or something).

I am fortunate: I am in the US, but the apps I have (three major German and one Austrian TV channel) stream most of the shows (movies, series, news, whatever) anywhere for free; there is an occasional movie where I am informed that the content cannot be displayed in my location, but that only happens in one out of ten or more, so all is good.
