How to check hours of HDD

Makes sense, could see an older drive maybe being an issue. Sold a HDD and person complaining that a like new HDD has 1000 hours on it. Don't see that as a viable complaint when the drive in relatively new.
AFAIKT, there no clock in there like the battery and Mac OS does not have a tool to tell you how many hours.
I would think the hours would mean nothing, it's the Read/Write/Deletes that add up.
If you mean the power-on hours of the hdd: those are stored in the SMART system of the drive. Tools like Smart Utility or smartmontools will show you that information.

As far as I know, yes. Smartmontools is free though, and Smart Utility has a trial version you can use for a while without paying.
I recommend DriveDx for a quick check on the SMART data of your drives.
