im trying to update does any one know how to

Read how do I update from iOS 4.1 on my iPod to iOS 5? Advice is unclear/incomplete. I tried erasing & restoring in iTunes, but ended up with iOS 4 again!

What model iPod?

What version of iTunes?

What computer OS and version?

A 2G and 3G iPod touch can only go iOS 4.1 if you OSX 10.4.X.

iOS 4.2.1 and greater requires 10.5.8 or greater
