Q: Airdropped photos missing (baby pictures!!)

For whatever reason, my iPhone 5S will no longer connect to my iMac (running El Capitan) as a drive, so I cannot upload photos to Lightroom directly. I thought I had found a workaround by using airdrop.

I used AirDrop to send ~600 pictures and videos taken between August 2015 and March 2016 to my iMac and had intended to load them into Lightroom via the downloads folder. I realized that about 400 of them are missing--all from a specific date range in the middle of the date range mentioned above. Unfortunately, that range includes the birth of my son and first 4 months of his life...and most of his photos were taken on the iPhone and I wiped everything off the phone as I was short on space.

The only thing I can think of is that some of the photos I airdropped appeared to have the same filename as photos already stored in iPhoto on the iMac.

Any ideas on where they might possibly be if they aren't gone forever. Someday I'm going to be telling my 3rd child that most of his photos were lost by mommy...
