My Word & PDF documents created yesterday are now greyed out & not accessible - what can I do please?

Try opening Disk Utility and verifiying Disk Permissions. Repair anything reported as awry.
Are you seeing these grayed out in the File Chooser of an application that cannot open these documents, and confusing that view, with a real Finder view that would show these icons normally?
