What is Classic Environment?

I am having trouble with my iMac, and I know zilch about computers. I hope someone can help. Three times today, a gray film has come over my screen along with a message that I must restart my computer. When the computer comes back on and I log in, I get a message that Classic Environment is starting, and then that there is an error and it can't start. It doesn't say what the error is, there's no number assigned to it or anything. The Classic Environment icon is a big yellow nine superimposed on the finder icon figure in gray. Does anyone know what is going on and what I need to do about it? I got this computer from my daughter, who had used it for a few years. I would appreciate any help and clarification.

Angela, welcome to Apple Discussions from a fellow Texan.

Apparently your iMac has Tiger (OS X 10.4) & OS 9.2.2 (classic) installed on the same hard drive. This allows you to run OS X applications & classis applications.

The first part of your problem (grey screen saying to restart) is an indication of a Kernal Panic. Why, upon restart is goes to classic, I'm not sure. I have OS 9.2.2 & OS X on separate hard drive partitions, so I have not encountered this problem.

A KP is uaually caused by a hardware problem. To start troubleshooting, disconnect all external devices except your mouse & kbd.

May be a solution on one of these links.
