My AVI video from 2012 is playing only sound, even though I'm editing visible image frames in iMovie 09. I'm using iMAC OS X El Capitan 10.11.4. Why can't I see the video? It plays fine in iPhoto and on the desktop, but not in iMovie.

I understand you are having issues working with AVI files in iMovie. Part of the issue is that the version of iMovie that you have is not compatible with OS X El Capitan. Try updating the iMovie software first. Then address the AVI video.
