When you connect it to your computer, watch the iPod's screen. Does it says "Connected" or "Do not disconnect" or give other indication that there is a connection? Does it only show the battery charging symbol? Or does it not react at all to being connected?
As a test, shut down the computer and disconnect all USB devices? You can leave standard USB keyboard/mouse connected, if used. If your computer is a laptop, connect its power adapter, so that it's not running on battery power. Do this to Reset (restart) the iPod

Start up computer, run iTunes, and connect the iPod to a direct USB port, by itself. Is there any difference?
Also, do you use a Mac or Windows PC? If Windows, what version? What version is iTunes?
