G4 Cube (Original Airport Card) + Airport Extreme Base Station?

G'day,

I have a G4 Cube with original Airport Card, and a 2011 era Airport Extreme Base Station, and I can't get them to talk to each other. 😟

I've changed the AEBS's settings to WPA/WPA2, because the original card/Mac OS 10.5.8 doesn't support WPA2... I tried the 3 variations of a/n b/g/n etc... But still the Cube just has a "timeout" error when I try to connect.

It can see the network is there.... but wont connect.

The AEBS and Cube are in direct line of sight, only around 3-4 metres apart.

Any suggestions on getting these two devices to play together?

Cheers

Hi LaPastenague,

Thank-you for the first meaningful response to this question that I've received across 4 different forums.

And - such a logical first step!

Ok, so I turned off all security, and tried the 3 channels noted above on the 2.4Ghz frequency... And no go on any of them. As there is no password, I'm not entirely sure what the error was, but it would think about it each time I tried to connect.... then nothing.

I have a G3 Pismo in the cupboard... I'll dig it out, and try its Airport Card, in case that's the issue... (First will remove and re-seat the Airport Card in the Cube, too). Bit frustrating... though the seller never mentioned including the card at all... so can't complain, I guess - unless as you suggest, the Cube does have issues...

(It has a fresh instal of OS 10.5.8, so not thinking it's a software issue.)

Thankyou again.

PS I've restored security now on my network. 🙂

In addition to LaPastenague's comments there are actually two versions of the original AirPort Card:

  • Revision 1 661-2219 M7600LL/* EEE code G3G appears in the card serial number
  • Revision 2 661-2549 M7600LL/D EEE codes LH8, M6Y or QAC appear in the card serial number

* The final character of the 1st gen card may be A - C; those ending in D are 2nd gen cards.

The first version of the 802.11b Original AirPort Card supported nothing more sophisticated than 40-bit WEP. The updated version supported not only 40-bit WEP, but also 128-bit WEP & WPA ... but NOT WPA2.

With wireless password off, even a b wireless card should connect to a Gen5 AE.

I would still expect it to throw up a message of some sort. Not to just stop.

There is a couple of things cosmichobo you can do..

1. Force the AE off N wireless.

I am deliberately using a 5.6 version utility. Set radio mode to b/g. The default setup should still work with b wireless but it can help things along to give it a bit of help.

2. Go to the advanced.. put the logging level up to debug.

Then check the log.. by toggling the wireless on the computer I get associated and disassociated connections showing up.. what I don't know is if AE log will show attempts at connections.. Cannot remember. Some other brand routers do a better job of showing attempts at connection.

If you are trying to make an antique computer work.. you can buy old airport cards on ebay readily enough.. pick one that is G wireless..

Make sure the antenna is plugged in correctly.

If you just want network connection but without too many cords.. you can use an airport router in extend wireless mode and plug that in as a wireless bridge.

Thanks for the replies again everyone.

I swapped the card in my Cube for the card in my Pismo, with the Airport Extreme back on WPA/WPA2 setting, and straight away it saw the AEBS, and connected with password.

I forget which way round they were, both one card ended with a "C", and one with a "B"... so either way - it's able to use WPA, not just WEP...

Regardless, I'm happy - it's performing what I needed it to perform - allowing me to use apps like Hippo, and screen sharing, to control the Cube whilst sitting on my sofa, rather than standing next to the Cube and using my body as a mousepad.

Now I just need to figure out how to get it to play AVI/MOV files better...
