iBooks is draining my battery

When I checked which app is using the most battery on my iPad, iBooks came up first, at 72% with only 20 minutes on screen, how can I stop this and stop it from happening again?

I've experienced a similar problem on an iPad Air 2 on iOS 9.3.1. I was using more battery reading a book than equivalent time browsing Safari and watching video.

I believe, my problem at least was caused by the new iCloud iBooks syncing introduced in 9.3.1. That's when my problem started. I've since disabled it in settings and battery usage has returned to normal.
