My mac is on OSX 10.8.5 Mountain Lion, and I want my notes app to sync with my devices running iOS 9. Any way to to this, or is the new notes app limited to El Capitan? Thanks!

Any note you create should be synced to all of your devices as long as you use the same account on each. The only exception would be if you use iCloud for notes, and "upgraded" to the new notes features in iOS 9. By default, iOS 9 still uses the standard notes format for iCloud unless you choose to upgrade.
Do you know if this is also the case for iOS 10? I'm still on Mountain Lion and can't upgrade OSX yet, but I just updated my iPhone 5 to 10.1.1.

I think it defaults to upgraded notes in IOS 10, but I'm not certain.
Thanks. I actually just figured it out. The answer is Yes, but it isn't clear, even after confirming with Apple tech support.
After upgrading from iOS 9 to iOS 10, opting out of any upgrades to iCloud Drive, and then launching the Notes app, a screen came up with only one option: "Upgrade Now". I had my latest iOS 9 state backed up and had Airplane Mode On as a safety to prevent any possible issues with iCloud & syncing. After tapping this option, another pop-up appeared which then gave me an option for "Not Now" which I had to select to maintain sync compatibility with Notes and OS's prior to El Capitan. This was the button i was looking for but it did not appear until this stage in the process.
Any way to get an iOS 9 notes app for 10.8 Mountain Lion?
