According to the tech specs for the 2015 7th gen iPod nano

https://www.apple.com/ipod-nano/specs/

For System Requirements, it says:

Mac: USB 2 or 3 port, OS X v10.7.5 or later, and iTunes 12.2 or later

If the version of Mac OS X is currently Snow Leopard 10.6.8, the latest version of iTunes it can run is not "12.2 or later." However, depending on the MacBook model, it may be able to run even the latest version of OS X (El Capitan 10.11.4). This Apple web page has more info, including hardware requirements

https://www.apple.com/osx/how-to-upgrade/

If you are not sure about the MacBook model, select About This Mac from the Apple menu. Even if the MacBook does not support El Capitan, it may support a version of OS X that can run "12.2 or later."

NOTE: Mac OS X 10.6.8 is quite old at this point. Some older third-party software currently used on the MacBook may not be compatible with later version of OS X. It is a very good idea to back up your data before performing major OS upgrades, such as by using Time Machine or "cloning."
