Why are my photos on my iphone blank?

I bought my iphone in January and was in Europe and took a bunch of pictures. I ended up getting a new iphone in the states, but everything was backed up into my cloud and half of the pictures from my old iphone showed up on my new one. All of my first pictures are just blank on my iphone. It says the location and time they were taken but nothing else and I can't share them. Does anyone know how I can access these? I tried getting into my cloud and nothing happened. I'm also brand new to Apple in general.

Not sure what you mean by "everything was backed up into my cloud"?

Go to Settings > Photos & Camera: if iCloud Photo Library was set to ON then the photos should be in iCloud.com. Try logging in to iCloud.com with your Apple ID / PW and checking. If they are there, on your phone try signing out of iCloud, doing a forced restart and signing back in to iCloud.

Forced Restart: Hold down the Home and Wake/Sleep buttons at the same time for about 15-20 seconds until the Apple logo appears.
