Q: Cannot update watch

I bought a used watch on eBay, the former owner has evidently turned off the activation lock. When I try to activate it, it says to update to the latest ios, then when I try to do this it the display says, checking for update and nothing else happens, been doing this for about three hours! Any ideas, Anyone??

    Make sure your iPhone is connected to wi-fi and power, and also make sure the watch is connected to power. Cancel the update and agree when it says reset. Power the device back on again and attempt to pair it to your phone. It should check for the update and go ahead. I had a hard time Saturday morning with my new Apple Watch getting it to update. Seemed to be a wi-fi network issue. Doing like I said got mine to finally go. Make sure you have the latest iOS on your iPhone as well.

    Thanks for the advice, but I have been trying this all afternoon and it just keeps checking.

    Do you suppose Apple is jammed up with requests? I wouldn't think so.

    In addition to what ChrisJ4203 said, your  Watch also much be charged to at least 50% before being the update process.

    1. You iPhone must be connected to power and a Wi-Fi network.

    2. You  Watch must be have at least a 50% charge in its battery, reconnected to its charger and be connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your iPhone.

    Guys, I really appreciate your input, but so far same old stuff, phone is at 100% charge and on the charger. Don't know the amount of charge on the phone, it's been on the charger since yesterday and still on it. I have the latest software on the phone, it's a 6s plus. I keep trying, with the same results.

    Try doing a reset on the watch. See this support document for assistance with that. Update the software on your Apple Watch - Apple Support

    Hi

    Try the following steps, which may help to address issues at or before the "verifying" stage.

    However, do not interrupt your iPhone or watch if the process has already reached the "installing" stage.

    • On your iPhone, close the Watch app and all other open apps:
      • Double-click the Home button, then swipe upwards on each app preview.
    • Remove your watch from the charger and restart both devices:
      • Turn both off together, then restart your iPhone first;
        • To turn your watch off: press and hold the side button until you see the Power Off slider; drag it to turn off;
        • To turn it back on: press and hold the side button until you see the Apple logo.
    • Replace your watch on the charger, keep your iPhone connected to power and try updating again by following the instructions here:

    Before trying the update again, it may also help to reset the network settings on your iPhone. You will need to reconnect your iPhone to your Wi-Fi network afterwards, so have your password ready.

    • On your iPhone: Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings.
    • Restart both devices again after doing this.
