My brand new 27-inch 3000-buck Imac reboots on its own. I'm running EL CAPITÁN-- sorry; my profile says Mavericks. Will change it now.
One article says that Spotlight is the culprit.
Also, twice I woke up to find my computer had just shut down. When I restarted, I got an error message that it had shut down because it encountered an error.
What gives?

Contact Apple if you are not happy and see what they say (I hope you also bought Applecare) If you are within the return period just send it back and get another, no point in wasting time when you have the ability to return it.

I'm replying to myself in hopes that I'll help others. Is your Mac restarting without asking permission?
If you have PIXELMATOR, I think it is your prime suspect. I thought that zapping the pram is what fixed the problem of auto restarting. However, I also stopped using Pixelmator at the same time. For months I had ZERO issues. Then, I used Pixelmator once and I was back with a restarting computer. Look at this:

It's a couple of years back and they say they've "SOLVED" it, but I think not.
UPDATE: I just opened an old KOMPOZER html editor and the machine restarted too, so it may be a problem as well.
