Q: Is my trackpad damaged? [Logs inside]
The trackpad on my 2014 Macbook Pro has been behaving erratically over the last little while, and I'm not sure if its a hardware or software issue. I have the latest El Capitan update 10.11.4.
Here's a rundown of my issues:
- Trackpad freezes for up to 10 seconds immediately after waking from sleep. This happened for about a month before today.
- A few days ago, I hooked up an external Magic Trackpad and keyboard over bluetooth. Both Magic Trackpad and keyboard worked (and continue to work) without issue. Built in trackpad freeze after waking (on the built in trackpad) seemed to get worse. Trackpad would occasionally freeze during normal tasks when doing multitouch gestures or drag/drop operations. Single finger use and physical click seems to work largely without issue.
- Disconnected and removed all Bluetooth accessories in the bluetooth preference pane. No change.
- I reset NVRAM and SMC according to instructions on the Apple website. No change.
So here I am now with a built in trackpad that doesn't work very well at all. Almost all multi touch gestures I do freeze the trackpad input, particularly 3+ finger gestures.
Its worth noting that the external Magic Trackpad and keyboard both work fine, including all multitouch gestures. Which makes me think it may be a hardware issue. I'm not under Apple Care or warranty.
I opened up the log in terminal and got the trackpad to freeze again, and recorded this output:
