Q: How do i add a previously installed windows installation to my mac pro

Hi guys, Just going to collect my newly purchased mac pro 3.1 (used) . I am moving over from PC but how do i add my existing windows installation to my mac ? The mac pro is 3.1 and has 2 x 500gb drives in a 1TB raid setup. Is it just a matter of plugging in my windows drive ( i am guessing no ) or is it a bit more complex than that ? Any help or guidance will be much appreciated and hope to give back as much help as i receive as i learn. Thanks

Mac Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.7)

You can install Windows on a Mac computer natively using Boot Camp Assistant or using a virtual machine like Parallels, Fusion, or VirtualBox. See the Boot Camp instructions located here: http://www.apple.com/support/bootcamp/. Ot if using a virtual machine see the instructions located on the Parallels, Fusion, or VirtualBox sites.

In either case you can not use an already existing PC installation of Windows. You must reinstall Windows on your Mac.

Windows installations are closely tied to the hardware on which they were originally installed, so unlike OS X, you can't swap operating systems disks between machines. But this is an opportunity: Windows disks build up a lot of crud over time and a fresh installation is a good idea for faster and less buggy performance.

For transfer of your files, you may be able to temporarily plug in your old Windows disk to copy information over, but it's extremely unlikely you could boot from it.

Thanks for the response guys. I took a plunge after discovering holding alt on boot allowed me to choose my drive. I took a gamble and chose my windows 10 pro install and it worked!  It loaded all drivers and ran fine, didn't even get the warning saying it's not activated because it's a different machine.  So, there you go if anyone else is reading, go for it! Although there is always the huge risk of monumentally screwing everything up. I got lucky I guess.

Good to know, I'll give that a try when I get Windows 10.
