Q: How to clean the "other" storage tab on Mac

Mid 2014, Macbook Pro (dual core i5: 2.6 ghz, 8gb ram, 128gb flash) and OS X 10.11.4

Does anyone know how to clean up the "other" storage tab on mac or just get rid of junk files entirely?

Thanks in advance.

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X Yosemite (10.10.3)

When you click on the apple logo in the top left of the screen, then click "about this mac," then click storage, you'll see a part that says other.

I know what you are talking about. Other is just a catchall category for files that do not fit the other classification categories. If you want to know how much free space you have then select the disk's Desktop icon. Press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window. In the topmost panel you will see listed: Capacity, Used, and Available. You can safely ignore the information displayed using About This Mac unless you have just re-indexed the drive: Spotlight- How to re-index folders or volumes - Apple Support.

Frankly speaking, Other storage in Mac is not something to overly concern yourself with unless you are running low on disk space. But, if you really want to clean up the Other storage space in your Mac OS X, then you will need to look in the below mentioned locations for the files and folder you no longer need.

    • User(s) Downloads folders at ~/Downloads

    • User Library caches ~/Library/Caches/

    • User Documents folders ~/Documents/

    • User Messages app attachments and media files

By applying some broader techniques, you can easily free up the disk storage and disk space.

In order to free up disk space, you can use below mentioned tips:

    1.Quit and relaunch apps

    2.Reboot your Mac OS X

3.Use OmniDiskSweeper to find the hidden storage space

    4.Tackle the downloads directory

    5.Empty trash folder
