If you're looking to continue use of an external hard drive that contains Time Machine backups, the steps below detail how to get it set up correctly in AirPort Utility.
- Connect the drive to a USB port on your device, then make sure it's powered on.
- From AirPort Utility, select the device. Click Edit, then click the Disks tab.
- Select the disk from the Partitions list and select Enable File Sharing.
- Click Update.

- To restore everything in your Time Machine backup, use OS X Recovery.
- To copy the files, settings, and OS X user accounts in your backup to another Mac, use Migration Assistant.
