I have a ton of old email. A lot of subscribed and unsolicited email totalling 5000 or so items. Some I need to retain. It's eating up a huge piece of my IPad4 storage.
I want to archive or save the old emails and open a new account that I will manage carefully. Looking for solutions other than $900 for a new iPadAir

You can easily create a new mail account. Delete the old account from your iPad and add the newly created email. We can give you a bit more details if you tell us who your mail provider is (example: yahoo, gmail, hotmail, live).
You may be able to better handle that on the web portal of your email provider - for example if your email provider is Yahoo! then the portal would be mail.yahoo.com
I would first sign in and check to see if that is functioning and that the email exists there
Then I would delete the account off the iPad first - THEN delete the emails from the iPad - IF the account is IMAP and you do not follow this sequence - you risk deleting the emails from the web server
That way as long as you keep the old account active on the portal - you can have access to the emails therein or save the ones you want to a cloud service like Google Drive
