Q: restoring AFP access for my two mismatched users
When I set up a replacement desktop mac (OS 10.11.4), I could no longer access it properly from my laptop (OS10.11.4) via AFP. AFP didn't accept me on my laptop as being the owner of my desktop files. After some searching I discovered that the new desktop had given me an altered User ID. It is 503 instead of 501 like it used to be, and like it is on my laptop. There is another user listed in my desktop that has UID 501 instead of me. (This all happened because when I received the new desktop, user 501 had already been defined.) Looking at the "advanced" pane in "users and groups" in system preferences I found that my UUID's on my desktop 503 identity matches that of my laptop with UID 501. So the only mismatched item between laptop and desktop is the UID as far as I can tell. Now it is clear why AFP is balking about giving me owner access to my files on the desktop!
How do I fix this mismatch of identities? Can I get rid of the (spurious) 501 user on my desktop and then change my userid from 503 to 501 using the advanced users-and-groups window? After I make this change, how will I access my files on Time machine (which will still have UID=503)? What are the pitfalls?
MacBook Pro, OS X El Capitan (10.11.4), null
