Q: Storage Graphic (About This Mac > Storage) Looks Wrong. Problem?

I have a macbook pro running El Capitan. When I open "About This Mac" and go to the "Storage" tab, here's what I see

Note that the disk is a 500 GB disk. There is about 375 GB free space. But as you can see, "About This Mac > Storage" suggests that about 423 GB are being taken up by "Apps." The idea that there is about 375 GB free is corroborated by "get info" on the disk:

But clearly you can't have 375 gig free and 423 gig taken up by anything on a 500 gig disk.

I recall (but don't have images) that the amount taken up by "Apps" was not this large a week ago, although it was still larger than what could have been possible.

I have run Disk Utility > First Aid a few times, and at least once in single-user mode as well as while running from a bootable flash drive.

What is happening here? Is this a serious issue?

MacBook Pro, OS X El Capitan (10.11.4)
