Q: Losing bluetooth connectivity on new imac

I bought a new 27" imac and when I transferred the data from my old imac it stopped the bluetooth connectivity working on the new imac.

Spent decades on apple tech support who suggested that a corrupt file was causing this.

Only problem is that one cannot locate a corrupt file.

mac support said I should, delete the hard drive, reinstall the el capitan OS and then  manually transfer the basic files to my new imac. I did this and the bluetooth connectivity stopped working again, and this was after transferring only word docs, photos and a few other things.

the last time I did this process, all I took over was the word docs and the photos and again this immediately cut the bluetooth connectivity.

Even if I leave all my old files on a hard drive, there will come a day when I need to access some of them on the new computer and again it might cut my bluetooth connectivity again. This is a bit of a nightmare. I would welcome any suggestions.

You have 90 days of complimentary AppleCare support with every new Mac. Please call AppleCare!

I have called them 35 times, and spent probably 23 hours on the phone to them.

They have occasionally given me incorrect suggestions, cut me off for no reason about 12 times and caused me more stress than I have had to endure for a very long time.

The consensus of opinion at apple support is that I have to drag my files piecemeal until the bluetooth connectivity stops, and that is the way I will know what particular file is corrupted and is causing the problem.

The problem is that I have done this several times and now I only need to manually drag two folders from my old imac to the new one and the bluetooth connectivity  shuts down.

I really need the suggestions of someone who knows their stuff !

I know this is not what you want to hear, but you need to call back and be patient. If you do not get the support you need, the request to have the case escalated until it is resolved. Personally I've owned Macs for over 10 years and have never had an issue with AppleCare. However it helps to have your facts straight, be patient, have your documentation handy. Apple's support is ranked #1 year after year, there must be some reason for that.

If for some reason you don't want to, then please follow the steps in If your Apple wireless mouse, keyboard, or trackpad aren't working as expected - Apple Support

And if that does not work, then restart the computer in Recovery Partition (Command + R) on start up and then re-install OS X. The type of re-install is not destructive. In other words all of your data, settings, etc.. will remain. However as with any install ALWAYS have a backup handy just in case.

Mr Kaufmann, I know this is not what you want to hear, but it now seems that every single suggestion that apple care gave me was incorrect.

Yesterday, an apple rep said they have discovered a 'known issue' whereby new 27" imacs with certain configurations lose their bluetooth connectivity if an OS update is made to el capitan.

It is inconceivable to me that apple did not sort this problem out earlier as there are clearly others with similar configured imacs who would also have this problem. A month of my time wasted and two computers sent back for no reason at all.  Genius !
