Q: switching apple IDs

My father and mother in-law have their phones set up under the same apple ID.  In order to create a new ID for one of the phones would they have to erase all of the settings on said phone and start from new? If the erase everything on the phone and start over they can still have access to all of their apps by setting up a family shared plan correct? Also, would there be any way to save their contacts?

Thanks

iPhone 6, iOS 9.2.1

There is no need to erase the phone. On one of the phones go to Settings/iCloud. If Contacts is on turn it off. You will be prompted to keep the contacts or remove them. Just keep them. Likewise for Notes and other data. It's OK to remove Calendar data, because after switching you can share calendar data with Family Sharing. After this log out of iCloud, Facetime, iTunes & App Stores. Then create a new Apple ID and log in with it. All of the content will remain on the phone. You can then set up Family Sharing: Family Sharing - Apple Support
