Apple does not do trade-ins. If the computer is new and within 14 days from date of purchase, then you can return it for an exchange. It will not likely be free. However, you should understand that the problem you have described is not caused by the computer model you have, and another computer won't fix it either. Given the age of your model the best you could hope for is to sell it on eBay, although there are reseller such as Expercom.com who will give you something in trade. But for what have that won't be much.

For the model you have you may need to backup your files, boot from your OS X DVD, erase the drive, then reinstall OS X and upgrade it as far as you can - most likely that is Snow Leopard which you can purchase from the Online Apple Store for $19.00 plus tax and shipping.

ttheratter is right that there is no trade-in program but Apple does provide some payment for returned Macs via a program run by PowerOn. More informationat this site, scroll down to "Get Started Online". Gazelle has a similar program. eBay, as mentioned above, could work.

But it's amazingly optimistic to think that a trade of your rather old device might get you a new machine. Same for the amount of money or credit you might get from any of the above. It won't come close to covering the purchase of a new Mac.

That is incorrect, Apple does not do exchanges either, if it is less than 14 days old you can return for a full refund. that is the policy.
