Q: planning to give away my old iMac

I am planning to give my 5-year old iMac to my grandson.  I have a backup on my TimeMachine drive so I plan to use the migration assistant for my own use to move files, etc.

I have Microsoft Office on my iMac that I am giving to my grandson plus a few programs such as PrintShop that I know he will use.   I want to erase all of my files, passwords, iTunes, keychains, etc. and I have read the article on giving away iMac.    I don't want to lose programs he might want to use and that I have added and I certainly want to keep the current OS.      I am currently using OX X  El Capitan 10.11.4.

Any suggestions?

Thank you.

R. Smith

    Mr. Smith,

You will be in violation of the licensing agreement if you give away MS Office and ANY other applications you paid for. Apple explains in full what to do when .

You also need to install the original OS as any OS downloads from the app store are licensed to you only and tied to your Apple ID.

You did not provide alll the necessary information required to really answer the question fully.  I assume that they are part of the household and that he is still a minor. An option would be that you retain the ownership of your Mac. Make him a user (could even be an admin on that Mac) as part of your family household. There you can give him the right to use software that belongs to you (organiser), as part of the household, if he is a dependent in any way.

The picture changes totally when he is an adult, earning his own keep and independent of your household. Then all the conditions mentioned it the Apple Support documents are applicable as mentioned by the previous posters.

Please read the software license agreement here:

There is no mention of family member, minors, or whether they are earning their own keep. It very clearly states that you are allowed one non-transferable license on any Mac you own and control. And, gifting or selling it to anyone means you have given up control and no longer own it.
