Continually receiving this "image cannot be displayed" message when using Word 2011 and Powerpoint 2011. Never had this issue before El Capitan.

Note -- The image THAT IS NOT DISPLAYING is not a link. It was a screen capture that I inserted into the Word document. If I restart my computer, this issue goes away temporarily. Then it begins again. Any ideas? All of the Office 2011 and Mac updates are installed. Thank you!

I am also getting this error message when working in Word, which may be related:

I would recommend contacting the Microsoft hosted MS Office for Mac product forums or MS themselves for support.

You have not mentioned that you have done any troubleshooting or even if your version of Office for Mac is up-to-date. The first place to start is ensure Office for Mac is as up-to-date as possible.

Office for Mac 2011 works fine in El Capitan, so my guess is yours is out-of-date or you have some other application problems.

I do not know how to troubleshoot this, other than checking to ensure all of my updates and versions are current.

Basic troubleshooting includes ensuring O SX is as up-to-date as possible and Office is too. It may also include doing some basic resets such as restarting in Safe Mode (hold down the Shift key on restart until the computer fully re-starts) and then restart normally. This clears some caches that may be corrupt.

You can also re-set the SMC and PRAM (do this 2-3 times) per iMac SMC and PRAM reset

So you went through the MS forum without any success?

It could be that you need to reinstall Office 2011. I had an issue with it prior to Capitan:

first I thought it was a bad install so I located my CD with the product key and removed the package properly and reinstalled it.

that worked for a while but then I ultimately traced it to fonts.

So I did an OS X recovery - something that seemed drastic - like burning your house down to control for fleas - but it really was painless. Just took a few hours. I am now running three versions of Office (2008, 2011, and 2016) without any issues.

In next post I will give you some boilerplate on reinstalling Office.

By reinstalling Office 2011 you might be able to address these problems on your Mac.

1 First be sure you have a current ** of your Mac.

I have the very same problem. Contacted both Apple and MS several times each. Reinstalled EL Cap and Office 2011 all the latest. Did safe restart, Deleted P -something etc. Nothing has fixed this problem where first I get the big red X with the message, then the crash. Restart-works fine for a day or so. This started the minute I upgraded to El Cap. Can anyone help me with this? Thanks you.

There are so many possible software and add-ons combos that it is difficult to say that what is causing your problems. My Office versions 2008, 2011, and 2016 all run fine on my El Capitan. I have a page numbering issue with Excel 2016 but that is something within that release

I would suggest a reinstall of Office as I describled above. If that does not work, make a backup and do an OS X Recovery. That fixed font issues I had with Office.
