Q: Iphone 5 upgraded to ios9.3.1 now lost all text messages, get no notifications, stuck 'sending'

I've recently upgraded to IOS9.3.1 (previously on much earlier version but cant remember which) using iphone 5.

Several issues now all related to messages

1) all messages have disappeared and any new ones only stay for few hours then disappear of their own accord (settings set to keep forever)

2) no alerts work on receipt of any new messages (changed audio sounds, checked notifications are on)

3) when sending messages (both imessage and text) status bar says sending 1 of ... forever - never goes away till message has disappeared from the message list.

Prior to upgrade to IOS 9 I backed up to PC and I think icloud

I've tried the following things most of them several times!

turn on off on off on off....

checked notifications are on in settings, messages, notifications,

turned i message on off on off

reset all settings (more then once)

restored from PC backup from just before the upgrade - dont know how to restore from any earlier backup if this is possible or to find out if I have a backup on icloud.

Please help I'm at my wits end, used to use messaging all the time and now completely useless.  Please no jargon and clear instructions for any fix I'm not an Apple expert.

thank you

Did you do a restore from back-up after factory reset or set phone up as a new phone?

Did you have any luck with Apple Support call back?

    Hi Karen,

    1. After the full reset I didn't restore from backup, but set all apps afresh, (slightly painful!)

    2. As for seeing messages on iPad.  I definitely had all my messages there, but I really can't remember exactly what I did to achieve that (sorry!). I see now that if I follow my directions above then not all of the messages appear, but that was one of the steps.  Sorry to not be more helpful.  Mike

    Hi All,

I see that iOS 9.3.2 is now available. I'm a little nervous about any software updates considering the issues mentioned on this thread. However has anyone updated to 9.3.2 yet? If so do you know if this has fixed any bugs with the i-messages and text messages 'disappearing' and get stuck on sending?

If not then I guess factory re-set and then manually add contacts, apps, music etc. back onto the phone. Restore from back-up onto my new iPhone 6s has given me the same problems as I had on my old iPhone 5c. Still currently making do with WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger for the time being.

    Thanks,

    Dave

    Hi Dave8619.

I did the factory restore as detailed above, and I've since upgraded to 9.3.2 (around a week ago), with no further problems.  Whether a direct upgrade to 9.3.2 with a 'faulty' phone would cure all ills I can't say I'm afraid.  Mike

I did a factory reset I'm afraid. It means you have to reset all your apps etc. Also with regard to just getting I-message, I got the same but under direction of my son I played with the "message" settings and got normal texts back. I can't quite remember what I did, but as my son told me it doesn't happen immediately after changing a setting, it takes a few minutes.

I did an upgrade to 9.3.2 and got all the problems as described above. It seems that the factory reset is key point.

    Cheers JemHadar UK and PepperT,

Whatever I do, I will definitely get more information around the pros and cons of the 9.3.2 software update, before pressing that update button.

With regards to the initial issue raised in this thread it definitely sounds like the factory re-set is the way to go, but not restore from back up. Setting up the phone as a new phone from scratch instead. Think I just need to overcome my own laziness to do that part! A bit of a hassle and inconvenience I guess!

    Thanks,

    Dave

    Hi All

I'm afraid I can't offer any advice or solution to this other than to add my frustration with not being able to resolve it. After happily running an older iOS on my iPhone 5 for years, I decided to do the 9.3.2 upgrade since many of my apps had stopped being supported on the old version. What could go wrong?

Well, exactly as described above, I not only lost all my messages but now have the same problem with sending status, no notifications and disappearing messages. The messages disappear after closing and re-opening the messages app, and all that is left are empty placeholders for there the messages were. This is exceedingly annoying as it renders my phone rather useless - I rely on my SMS's and messages. I can't believe that the only solution offered by Apple is to do a full factory reset, this is clearly a common problem given the number of users who have experience the same thing (and is quite simple to replicate). I will raise this with them again (probably to no avail) but at least will air my annoyance.

A factory reset and losing all my settings and app data is not a solution for me - essentially suggesting that the backups taken are completely useless.

Would be interested to know if anyone has found any more on this or has received any further input from Apple.

    Thanks

I've still got exactly same issue despite doing everything mentioned above and so please do keep us updated if you find a solution.

I had the same problems after recently upgrading my iPhone 5 to iOS 9.3.4.  After trying everything (changing my Message settings, re-booting, etc.), I worked with an Apple Customer Service person who tried to have me do a Back Up then a Restore.  I couldn't because my iPhone had too little available memory (1.7GB).  So she had me do a Factory Re-Set (Settings+General+Reset+Erase All Content and Settings) without first doing a Backup.

I was reluctant, but she said because I had done an iCloud backup before or while upgrading to iOS 9.3.4, the phone's settings would be restored.  She was right.  Once the phone was wiped clean, it prompted me to Restore from iCloud (or iTunes) Backup.  Once I did that, all my text messages returned, my incoming text alerts resumed, and other apps and settings appeared normal.  Finally, the iPhone did not revert to iOS 7, which is what I'd upgraded from.  Instead, iOS 9.3.4 was on the phone and it is a big improvement.  The only issue appears to be that I'm missing the text messages from the three days since that backup.  Otherwise, all appears to be fine.

Same problem here Iphone5/ios9.3.4 (upgraded from ios7) :

    * I lost all old text/imessages on upgrade to ios9.3.4 BUT

    * For about a week after upgrade to ios9.3.4 new message notifications and new message retention was ok. (so issue may not strictly be related to upgrade).

    * The point at which I lost message notifications/retention coincided with point where my service provider (O2/Tesco) notified me that I had gone over my monthly data allowance (this may just be coincidence) - I am not sure if they tweek something on their end which for example stops message sent notifications coming back to the phone?

INTERESTING : Settings | General | Storage & iCloud Usage  | [STORAGE] Manage Storage | Messages  tells me  Messages is taking up 209MB despite no messages being visible in the Messages app.

If no other solutions are available over the next week I will report back on if reset + restore to backup works for me.

I have the same thing.  Thanks for the tip  - I will try it.

Another careless and untested upgrade from Apple.
