Q: what if you have no way to contact the owner because your friend sold the phone to you how would you activate the phone?

what if you have no way to contact the owner to put their apple id account because your friend sold it to you and they don't know the account

Give it back to your "friend" and ask for a refund.
There is no other way unless you want a shiny paperweight.

Friends don't sell friends locked iPhones. You might want to start looking for new friends.
