Q: iPad Pro 9.7 Random Restart

Normally wouldn't think much of this but, I have a 2 day old iPad Pro 9.7 128GB that has restart on me twice so far. In the middle of using it, it will cut to the Apple logo on the black background for a minute before returning to the passcode screen. Oddly enough, it will accept Touch ID in place of a passcode, something it doesn't usually do when it loses power. Any idea on the cause or how to figure it out? I chatted with the tech support but they only help they could provide was to do a restore. I just performed it, but my concern is that I installed an app or enabled something causing the iPad to crash and it'll simply continue to do that due to the bad app.

After I received your post I went online and checked what the tech pages said about the new update.  They all spoke about the update fixing the bricking the iPads, but none mentioned the random restarts.  Looks like they are not going to be fixed with this update.

IMHO, this issue will never be addressed in any update, without Apple officially recognising the bug.

A similar thing happens with Apple Mail on any OS X version after Mountain Lion. There is a printing bug in it, and every version upgrade/update I file a bug report, but to no avail. It's like shouting into the void.

Class action law suit could be a means to get official recognition of the problem. So we will know eventually if it is hardware or software related at the least.

I think Apple knows about this issue because all my bug reports were closed as a duplicate issue.I had it crashing everyday at first but after the update to 9.3.2 it only crashes about once a week. I hope when the new update comes it will stop crashing completely.

Does anyone have any proof that Apple knows about this issue? I think not. This is unacceptable for $1000 product. Apple do something already!!!

Ashley, of course Apple knows about this.  If you read the posts people have gotten replacements that reboot, gone to the Genius Bar and spoken to tech support.  There are also reports about this problem on the Internet. No one knows how to fix it except probably Apple and they are ignoring it.  Why?.

My iPad pro rebooted a lot at a recent conference. This will kill Apple customer loyality as the bug should be fixed by now. Having an expensice pro version do this is unacceptable. My students are having the same issue. Apple will need to provide refunds on all iPad Pros if they do not fix this. This will not end well for Apple if they keep ignoring customers. They need to aknowledge they have a problem and tell people what they plan to do.

Microsoft will sell way more Surface 4s once the world figures out the iPad Pro is a dud.

I agree with you 110 percent. Apple's QC is horrible lately. The IOS updates are not being tested properly. I have been a long time Apple customer and shareholder. I'm thinking of switching to Android and Samsung products. Apple you dropped the ball on this one!!

You are right Ashley. The update did nothing for our problem.  It seems that it happens for me when I hit the home button to leave Safari.  Because the home button seems to trigger it it may also be a hardware problem. I hope not.  The only other change I have seen is that the usage and standby times on the battery page disappear.  All tech support says is that the engineers are working on it. It has been over 2 months and no word from Apple.  I consider my iPad defective out of the box.

I teach with an iPad every day and help support a school iPad program with 750 devices. I have owned an iPad 2, iPad 3 and iPad Air 2. This excludes the other 4 iPads I bought for my family members.

My 9.7 Pro is a work device and includes an Apple Pencil ($165) and Apple Keyboard ($229) This is an expensive 128 GB device with all the extras.

I transferred all my data and apps to the new iPad recently. My iPad Air 2 is fantastic and never gives a days problem.

I encouraged other teaching staff to buy the iPad Pro 9.7, so this looks really bad. I now need to tell them not to buy one and consider a Surface Pro 4.

My wife has a Surface Pro 4 from work and an iPad Air 2

So yes, I think Apple customers can be really angry by now. This bug is not new and should be fixed by now.

You try teach a class with your device rebooting all the time. It is a joke. None of my Windows computers have done this so often.

I have lost critical data using this device whilst marking. The iPad Pro is not reliable enough to be used in industry.

I will most likely transfer my data back to my iPad Air 2 (128 GB Cellular) and ask Apple if they are going to refund the Pencil, Keyboard and iPad Pro.

Hopefully they will either fix the bug or make a public announcement about the issue.

I disabled Safari on my iPad Pro using the restrictions and it did not crash all day. So Safari is related to the reboots.

Maybe someone has a backdoor using Safari on the Pro. This would explain the random reboots.

I am sure Apple already know why Safari is doing this. I am now using Chrome with Safari gone from my iPad.

BE interested in seeing how this goes after a couple of days... I have the new pro 9.7 after the error with the last update... I haven't installed the new update yet... I think I may go with Google too!

I don't know if it is just Safari since my iPad never restarts when I am using Safari.  It restarts when I hit the home button to leave Safari. As I wrote in another post it also removes the usage and standby times on the battery page.  It has also restarted when going out of apps and using the home button. Does it mean there. Is a bad connection with the home button.  Since this problem does not make the 9.7 unusable I wonder if that is the reason Apple is dragging its feet on this one.  They have not to my knowledge acknowlegdged that there is a problem and giving us some hope of a fix..All the techs say is the engineers are working on it. I was told if this update does not fix it the next one will.  When will that happen? When they bring out the next iPad?

Apple's answer so far is to bring it in and try and replicate in store to get a replacement.  I guess their employees have 20 minutes to several hours to stand their until it happens?  Last time the employee gave up and gave me a refurb replacement which has the same issue.  I called a few days ago and was told to do this process over again.  I escalated to a senior rep. who spoke to a tech.  I was also told they know about the issue and they are working to fix it in a software update.  Pretty frustrated at this point. Not sure if I should try to get another replacement or keep waiting.
