Q: iPad Pro 9.7 Random Restart

Normally wouldn't think much of this but, I have a 2 day old iPad Pro 9.7 128GB that has restart on me twice so far. In the middle of using it, it will cut to the Apple logo on the black background for a minute before returning to the passcode screen. Oddly enough, it will accept Touch ID in place of a passcode, something it doesn't usually do when it loses power. Any idea on the cause or how to figure it out? I chatted with the tech support but they only help they could provide was to do a restore. I just performed it, but my concern is that I installed an app or enabled something causing the iPad to crash and it'll simply continue to do that due to the bad app.

What happened is that your iPad crashed. Whenever there is too much stuff going on your iPad restarts.

If iOS 10 does not fix this, then the iPad goes back for a refund. That includes the Keyboard and pencil as useless with my Air 2.

We will see when the Beta comes out. Otherwise the end for that 9.7 Pro.

    HI,

My husband's iPad came in. He had it for a week. It didn't have the random restart issues. Instead it would not read the SIM card. Diagnostics showed numerous internal errors. Verizon and apple care could not fix it. So they gave us another one. This would be the fourth iPad Pro 9.7 256 gb wifi/cellular we've had in 3 months. Of course it crashed the first day we used it. The random restarts are back with a vengeance.

I Went to 2 Apple stores here in Chicago. The salespeople claim no one has returned any iPad pros because of a random restart issue. I find that hard to believe.

I have exchanged twice and both of them still restart. It use to do it everyday but now its about once a week so defiantly better but not perfect. I am hoping IOS 10 will fix it. I don't think the next release will fix it.

Maybe iOS 10, but not sooner.  lets just say I tried with something that's not iOS 10, but newer than the latest release, and apple removed my comment. iOS 10 or its hardware related, very disappointing that this iPad is no better than the $200 Android devices I've seen, which are crap.

I just got off the phone with an Apple Senior Technical Support Advisor. He confirmed that they know about the issue, and there is a relation to the case where the reboot screen appears when starting an app (not leaving as it is here). The problem is limited to iPad Pro 9.7 only.

Further details were not shared, as that is classified (with my respect to that).

Just knowing the problem is recognised, makes me already feel better. I have high hopes it gets solved in later updates.

Meanwhile I'm walking the Tech's suggested path of eliminating all circumstantial causes, by performing a clean install via recovery mode, and not reinstalling my backup right away (to eliminate a cause in my setup).

I have been having random reboots everyday since 3/31/16. I tried doing a clean install. It still crashes. This has to be a hardware issue and not a software issue. Why doesn't Apple acknowledge this. I am a very unhappy customer and shareholder.

I am with you Ashley.  I  am using my 4ht IPad now and all of them have been defective.  It is just not restarts, but ITunes not loading, Email not updating properly, etc.  Apple had problems with IOS 7 doing random restarts and they should have learned from that.  I agree that this is more than just a software issue and that is why this has not been resolved.  It seems that the salespeople in the Apple Stores and some of the senior techs have not heard of this problem. HA!

I have done restore and set up as new still restarts. Restore and set up as new is all Apple Care seems to be able to do. I have never had this fix an issue but do it before I go to get help because they think it is a magic fix.

Take this with a grain of salt, but I have reason to believe that Apple thinks this issue may have been resolved by iOS 10 beta 2. (Exact wording was seed 2 of Whitetail, if that means anything to you) It might take a bit but I am going to attempt to confirm. That being said, please don't anybody try the betas unless you are absolutely ****ing sure you know what you are doing. I don't want (digital?) blood on my hands.

Will this be iOS 10 public beta?

Not fixing this will be the death of the iPad in education. Nobody is going to support and maintain a defective product.

I have already had a random reboot during a paypal payment online. I no longer use my iPad Pro for banking, presentations or anything critical.

I have also lost emails, online posts and even a post on this discussion when it rebooted.
