Q: iPad Pro 9.7 Random Restart

Normally wouldn't think much of this but, I have a 2 day old iPad Pro 9.7 128GB that has restart on me twice so far. In the middle of using it, it will cut to the Apple logo on the black background for a minute before returning to the passcode screen. Oddly enough, it will accept Touch ID in place of a passcode, something it doesn't usually do when it loses power. Any idea on the cause or how to figure it out? I chatted with the tech support but they only help they could provide was to do a restore. I just performed it, but my concern is that I installed an app or enabled something causing the iPad to crash and it'll simply continue to do that due to the bad app.

Moment of truth for Apple and the iPad Pro 9.7

I have updated to iOS 10 public beta and will wait to see if it reboots.

Lets hope this is the last we hear of it.

Just wanted to chime in so I could be updated on this topic. I have a 128GB 9.7" iPad Pro LTE and experienced random reboots, mostly when switching apps, and other times when exiting Safari. Standard and full DFU restoring, iCloud backup and fresh iPad setup, nothing resolved it. Apple replaced it, but the new one experiences the same issue.

I'm willing to upgrade to iOS 10 PB1/DP2 if this resolves it.

This must be a hardware fault on all iPad 9.7 iPads, if Apple are unable to fix it with several software updates.

So very very bad for the iPad Pro 9.7

I suspect many people will demand a refund for a defective product sold to them in good faith it would work.

This is a lot of money for a device that keeps rebooting all the time.

This is horrible news. The reboots have not been fixed with IOS 10. I cant believe it. I spent 1000 for a Lemon. I am so disappointed with this company.

I have told our IT department to avoid all purchases for staff until this is fixed. We have lots of iPad 2s that need to be replaced. This will cost Apple a lot of money if they do not tell people what is going on.

I have sent my Beta log files to Apple after the reboot. They can see what caused it.

I don't get why some people are having this issue, what makes it so strange is that you keep having the same issue with replacement iPads.  This cannot be a problem with the design of the product but must be something about the way you are using them that is the same among the cohort.  Could everyone having this issue perhaps post what network equipment they are using to connect to the internet, Modem Brand and Model, and perhaps also the ISP you have.  It has to be something common to each user if replacements are not fixing the problem.  This really bothers me to see this problem occurring with a device I haven't experienced an issue with, and I can understand your frustration.

I'm not saying it's not a problem for you but I really don't think that it is due to the product, it would be nice to know what setup everyone has that is experiencing the issue.  I have never had this issue with my iPad 9.7 and I am happy,

What Setup I have that works fine (no restarts, at all):

    - ASUS RT-AC5300 Router

    - Arris SurfBoard SB6183

    - Time Warner Cable 400 Mbps Service

    - OpenDNS DNS Server

The only common thing would be the amount of storage used, apps on the device and settings used.

i,e iCloud etc. I can not see how an Internet connection can be the cause.

Surely the beta log file would indicate what the last process, etc was running just before a reboot.

No, it could be your Wi-Fi router having old software, or a bad DNS server (I recommend OpenDNS, 208.67.222.222, 208.67.220.220), I have had something similar happen with another hardware item that took me forever to realize it was the Wi-Fi router having out of date firmware causing the issue.

I also had another hardware item that was incompatible with the Arris line of modems. That was a different location with a router that kept dropping a connection.  This feels like a similar issue as I have done the replacements thinking that one item was the issue when it really wasn't.

Mine rebooted at work on a HP enterprise system, so not my home WiFi.

Can it be rebooted remotely via the Internet?

Yes, iPads can be remotely controlled, like Macs or PCs can be.  What would be interesting to try in your case is to see if you have the same issue with your iPad Pro on your home connection.  Then you would not be on an enterprise system that can be monitored and controlled.

It will be hard to tell if it is fixed in the newest beta of 10 because I have read that there are random restarts happening on all devices running  it. So I don't know when we will have a true fix for this issue.

I wonder how many iPad Pro 9.7s are sold to date. Mine in the only one I have seen at work or amongst friends. I hhave seen the larger iPad Pro, however not this 9.7

The price is a lot more when you combine an appll pencil and keyboard. The Air 2 is still great and would be selling well. I am sure Apple would improve their PR if they could guarantee it is not hardware related.

Yeah, the 12.9" has completely different internals, which could explain the difference.  The 9.7" has an Apple 339S00109 Wi-Fi Module and the 12.9" model has a Universal Scientific Industrial 339S00045 Wi-Fi Module.  You can compare the differences.  From a cursory search of the web it looks like the 9.7" iPad Pro is the only device that has this particular Wifi chip.

So I would guess that the wifi connection may very well be the issue.  Since I have seen no complaints out of 12.9" users and this being the one significant difference, I would try to see if it works better on another wi-fi connection.  Enterprise systems are known to have out of date software as companies hate to upgrade software that might affect users that are currently working fine.

    12.9" Model

    9.7" Model
