Q: iPad Pro 9.7 Random Restart

Normally wouldn't think much of this but, I have a 2 day old iPad Pro 9.7 128GB that has restart on me twice so far. In the middle of using it, it will cut to the Apple logo on the black background for a minute before returning to the passcode screen. Oddly enough, it will accept Touch ID in place of a passcode, something it doesn't usually do when it loses power. Any idea on the cause or how to figure it out? I chatted with the tech support but they only help they could provide was to do a restore. I just performed it, but my concern is that I installed an app or enabled something causing the iPad to crash and it'll simply continue to do that due to the bad app.

That is likely because part of anyone using the iOS10 beta software agreed to NOT discuss it outside of the beta forum (if there is one)

So check out the NDA you agreed to and consider that when you're posting.

I read it before they deleted it.  I agree with you.

    Hello

Wow.... I spent 3 hours last night trying to get my iPad back to normal after removing the new ios due out in fall.

Following Apple's instructions for going back to 9.3.2 worked partially. I was abled to rolled back the iOS and I restored my achieved backup. However my videos and movies would not properly sync to the iPad. Also the device kept freezing and certain features stopped working. Finally I just returned the ipad to factory settings. Then intalled my archived backup. Finally everything is back to normal.

No more betas for me lol! I only tried it to stop the random restarts. Unfortunately they persisted even with the new iOS.

I am fortunate to have an iPad Air 2 that is still fairly new, so not missing my work iPad Pro.

I liked the keyboard, camera and speakers. My iPhone has the same camera, so Airdrop to my Air 2.

I already have a keyboard for my Air 2 and do not use the pencil that much. So will return the iPad Pro 9.7 if the reboot is not fixed. I would rather use my reliable Air 2. Especially when banking or buying online.

I do not trust the Pro anymore as the reboot could be any time.

    Hello,

Just got off the phone with a senior advisor who told me the reason the random crashes keep happening on each iPad Pro 9.7 device that I have purchased is because the back up file I keep using is corrupt. This makes no sense as this problem occurred on the first iPad pro I purchased which was not set up from a backup. It was set up as a new iPad and I had to install everything piecemeal. I am so irritated!

She also claims I can't exchange for a fifth iPad Pro 9.7 since this issue is with my file and not the device!

I Keep exchanging because I keep hoping I will luck up and get one of the iPad Pro 9.7 that doesn't have this issue.

It is not from a corrupted backup as I have restored and set up as new multiple times and it did not fix it. It seems apple has no idea what is going on. I have also replaced mine three times and it has not fixed it. The good news is it only does about once a week instead of everyday like when I first got it. I was told at the Apple store that it was a known issue and would be fixed in a software update. The update came and it did not fix it.

She is full of it.  I am also on my 4th IPad and all except the first have been set up from factory not from a back up yet I still have problems.  They are refusing to acknowledge the problem or do anything to correct it.  We have 2 IPads, 2 IPhones and 2 IMacs and we have never had a problem with any of them.  Maybe it is time to rethink the brand we Wish to use.

Here is my experience so far. I hope it helps resolving the issue. I bought my 256 gb only wifi iPad Pro in Spain while on holiday. Shortly after I started having the issue of random starts. It would be something about three or four times a week. Now I returned home to Bolivia where I work as a voluntary and since then not a single restart. It has been a month already. The only difference that I can think of apart from the obvious one it's the internet speed. In Spain we have from 20 to 50 mbps and in here goes from 0.5 to 5 mbps maximum. Could this have something to do with a failure on the wifi chip and the way it handles data? I hope it's not a stupid idea...

I think you are getting what I am trying to say with the new Wi-Fi chip Apple used in this device.  If you read about how Apple is sourcing Wi-Fi chips from probably a different source.  Of course when using a new supplier or even a new model, there are differences in how the chip will handle data.  The good news is that this is all software and is controlled by the baseband driver that can be updated in a very small release.

I haven't had this issue as I have very high speed internet everywhere I have used my iPad.  I assume that this is a problem with a very few people's internet connection.  I think that this can be figured out by getting everyone that is having the issue to share what their network connection consists of, it has to be the reason for this issue and the same issue reoccurring on replacement iPads.

What does Wifi have to do with Springboard crashes? I'm getting them in airplane mode. Your theory makes no sense!!

IF this is true why has Apple not done the small release in 3 months???? Why is it still happening with IOS 10?????

I Agree!! This has to be a hardware issue and a software issue and Apple just doesn't know how to handle it.

Look, I posted previously the differences between the 9.7 and 12.9 versions of the iPad Pro, the only substantive difference is the Wi-Fi chip.  It just doesn't make logical sense that individuals having replacement iPads continually having the same problems on different units, that others do not have at all.  I would say that sure maybe the first time it could be a problem with the device, twice with the same issue, it is something you are doing differently from the rest of the masses that do not have these issues.

To constantly complain without trying to figure out if it is an issue with something else you are using is not going to get you a solution to your problem.  If a cohort of individuals seeing the same issue could publicly say how they are connecting to the internet, the sole difference in the hardware, you could provide what is most likely an issue with another product you are using with your iPad.  If it is an issue with an old or unique gateway, this issue could be addressed by Apple with a small addition to the driver file for the connectivity chip in question.

But without further information provided by those with the issue (who are a very small minority), it will not be possible to diagnose where the issue lies.  Those of us that are interested in figuring out issues like this can search out issues with other hardware compatibilities by actually getting our hands on the other hardware you are using and replicating the issue, but not without your help by discussing how you are using the product.
