Q: iPad Pro 9.7 Random Restart

Normally wouldn't think much of this but, I have a 2 day old iPad Pro 9.7 128GB that has restart on me twice so far. In the middle of using it, it will cut to the Apple logo on the black background for a minute before returning to the passcode screen. Oddly enough, it will accept Touch ID in place of a passcode, something it doesn't usually do when it loses power. Any idea on the cause or how to figure it out? I chatted with the tech support but they only help they could provide was to do a restore. I just performed it, but my concern is that I installed an app or enabled something causing the iPad to crash and it'll simply continue to do that due to the bad app.

Well, here is what I think is going on and why it relates to the Wi-Fi chip, even if you might get a crash when on LTE...

The flaw in the Wi-Fi routers that have USB ports in them is that the header file for a packet being received by a device (the iPad Pro) misleads the iPad as to the real size of the packet.  This is how hackers are able to use this as an exploit as well as it being able to crash a kernel; a header will inform the wi-fi receiver that the packet addressed to the iPad is much smaller than it actually is.   It can be a massive disparity in size, this leads to a buffer overflow due to a memory leak being caused due to the system needing to store the excess data received in memory, while also not being able to access the data received.  So it will gradually fill up the remaining memory until the memory is literally full when the computer thinks it has more room.  This is when something has to give, and therefore the system crashes because it tries to free or store memory registers that don't exist.

Now why I think it will occur even when using LTE; normally when going from Wi-Fi to LTE storage, you don't even think about it, you either turn off the Wi-Fi or just go out of range.  So you are starting with a kernel that already has a bad idea of what the memory state is.  Now I don't know if you have ever programmed an iPhone or iPad application or not, but even when you try to code your program to be free of memory leaks, you will still program them in and you will only find out when you get crash reports back from it being in the wild.

You are thinking about it in relation to older computers correctly, because due to the high price of the memory being on the processor itself in phones and tablets, it must be limited.  So 2 GB of RAM can be much more quickly filled with junk from buffer overflows.  Desktop and notebook computers take much longer to do so these days due to the sheer size of the total memory (16-32 GB with the ability to use a hard drive to use as virtual memory).  This is where the slow down comes into play with regular computers.  Normally when you get a computer that hangs, you will reboot it and in the process will clean the memory out.

So I would still look into the wi-fi router you are using and see if it has the NetUSB flaw as it could still be leading to the crashes even when on LTE.

Wifi problems could easily be ruled out when hooking up a computer directly to the modem with Ethernet cable, and forwarding internet to a WiFi connection from that computer. "Internet sharing", if you will.

If I have the time I'm happy to try this out for you, but I'm occupied for a full two weeks right now.

If its the router why does only one of our iPad pros have this issue.

Good question, perhaps different use patterns, but you need to fix your router for security's sake if nothing else.  DD-WRT is a better firmware option than what comes from the manufacturer anyway.

I was going to tell you the same thing.  My firmware was updated 5/2/516 and they could update those sold online, but not those on the shelves.  There was no problem with the Apple Extreme.  I am going to wait and see what Apple is going to do since right now this latest 9.7 is not restarting that often.

Everyone should try this... Not sure if it will help but worth a try.

Goto SETTINGS, GENERAL, MULTITASKING... Then enable GESTURES.

Use four fingers to swipe up... it performs the same function as double clicking home button. If the above doesn't help, then we can rule out hardware issues with the home button. IMO, this is not a hardware issue. Maybe there is an issue with the display driver. my old laptop had a similar issue and would blank out and return to normal when I played graphics rich games.

It's not a hardware problem. Look at the logs. Every time the iPad reboots, it creates a Jetsam log. That means the problem is that the iPad runs out of RAM somehow.

    Same issue here.

Apologies if another commenter has already stated this...

In addition to contacts folks have made with Apple Geniuses, senior advisers on phone, etc. it is always a good idea if everyone experiencing a problem like this fills out a feedback request.  I don't know how many of these need to be filled out for Apple to consider that perhaps the canary has died in the coal mine, but it certainly seems safe to say that the more the better.  Here is the link to the iPad feedback site.  You could simply cut and paste the OP's comment in the description box.

    My particulars:

9.7" iPad Pro running iOS 9.3.2

Router: Apple Time Capsule-4th generation running latest software

    Internet specs:

Max. internet download speed=200 Mbps. (Never goes much below 80 Mbps.)

Max internet upload speed=25 Mbps.  (Quite consistent)

    Cheers, Mr. Luigi

I tried shrubbery, but I could not log in.  Seems like it is only for developers not us lowly mortals.

In reply to your elaborate story on the how and when in case of LTE, shrubbery, please explain why the ill-sized packages trigger a reboot event only when I press the home button in Safari.

I make use of a lot of apps that operate heavy on the WiFi. One of those is Notes Plus, a written note taking app that posts every change on the page directly into my Dropbox. I can operate that app literally for days without any problem.

And there is this game Clash of Clans, which cannot operate with the slightest flaw in internet signal; I use it even sometimes to test the strength of the signal because it complains immediately. There's Minecraft, where my iPad acts as a server to up to 3 other people on the net.

Packages flying around without ANY problem. For days straight. I've never had any reboot on those apps.

But as soon as I look up a page in Safari and hit the home button, bam! and I'm confronted with the Apple logo.

MAngoSoda, I'll try to remember using the gesture in stead of the Home button when leaving Safari next time.

Although I have to add to this: it also happened to me when I left Safari using the small "<Back to Mail" link in the upperleftmost corner (when I used Safari by following a link in an email)

And it also happened when I left Safari by clicking a proprietary link which sends me off to the YouTube app, or another protocol handler.

    Hi theshrubbery,

I am a developer and have access to http://bugreport.apple.com/.

However, non-registered developers can not access its services.  As I previously stated, for iPad specific feedback non-registered developers will need to use http://www.apple.com/feedback/ipad.html.

    Regards, Mr. Luigi
