0x0000034 BCD Error Bootcamp, No Startup Repair

Hi! I have a late 2013 15" Macbook Pro which has been dual booted with OS X 10.11.3 and Windows 10.

After a particularly large set of Windows updates, upon restart I get an error stating that there are missing boot files (error 0x0000034). I have followed other threads and created a Windows 10 install media on an SD card, and am attempting to run Startup Repair to fix the BCD error.

However, when booting from the SD EFI icon in bootcamp, I get a message stating that it looks like I have begun an upgrade to Windows, would I like to continue the upgrade by removing the installation media, or instead perform a clean installation of Windows 10. If I remove the media, I get returned to the original blue error screen. If I attempt a clean install, I go through a few windows asking for language, input etc and then arrive at a window which asks where I want to install Windows 10.

There are 5 possible partitions available in the dialog window, and a variety of options including "Refresh" and "Format", but there is no option to run Startup Repair.

There is another icon/option that appears in bootcamp which is simply labeled "Windows". Attempting to boot from that icon gives the same results as booting from the EFI icon, but at a much lower screen resolution (everything is bigger and more jagged).

TL;DR: How do I run Startup Repair off of a bootable SD card, when Windows believes I was in the middle of an upgrade when the BCD files were lost?

Update: I now suspect that the issue is the ISO used to create the boot media is from a later version of Windows, as my machine crashed in the middle of an update. Is there any way I can find out what version of Windows I had when the BCD files were deleted, and if so, how I can set up the boot media so that the computer allows me to use Startup Repair?

I have tried booting from a USB drive instead of SD, with no difference in results.

A later version of W10 should be able to repair the earlier version of Windows. If you have tried the USB method and it failed, was the current installation of W10 an upgrade from W7/W8.1?

1. Can you post the output of the following Terminal command?

sudo fdisk /dev/disk0

2. Your BCD could be located in the Mac's EFI partition.

3. Try a USB flash drive and build a W10 installer using BC Assistant and test if you are able to repair.

4. Did you try and use Bootrec.exe to rebuild the BCD?

2. I believe it is, because the partition is formatted in GPT, which is what happens if you install bootcamp through EFI.

3. I have tried this and got the results indicated in the original post: no option to enter Startup Repair.

4. Because I can't get to Startup Repair, I don't know of any way to run Bootrec.exe. I've tried using various Function keyboard shortcuts to access the repair tools, to no avail.

Additionally, I created a Windows 8 installer (I originally had 8 Pro Student). Booting off of that installer caused the "It looks like you started an upgrade..." dialog to not appear. Continuing through the boot leads to standard options to input language, input etc, until arriving at the same screen as with the W10 installer: "Choose a location to install Windows".

1. Was W8/8.1 installed using EFI? EFI would need a GPT-only disk, which explains your MBR output.

2. Can you use Can't resize Macintosh HD partition as a reference and mount your EFI partition and check if you have a Microsoft Directory structure in the EFI partition?

1. Unfortunately, I don't remember. It was in late 2013, so it could be either.

2. To confirm, you mean execute these commands?

This is where your BCD was written during the upgrade. This is also the S: partition on a GPT.

Please see http://jmeosbn.github.io/blog/windows-8.1-efi-install/ as an example. There is an incomplete discussion 0xc000000e Error on Windows after Partition Resize that shows the diskpart steps.

Can you get to Windows Safe Mode? Please also see https://www.asus.com/support/faq/1013074/ . Repeated boot failures automatically trigger Safe Mode.

Read through the blog post and the discussion; then tried to start in Safe Mode.

1. Is this correct: currently, I only have one GPT partition, which has some missing BCD files. This partition is *not* a hybrid MBR.

2. Can I manually access the restore tools using bcdedit?

3. I cannot get to Safe Mode. I've tried mashing F8 as well as Shift + F8 on startup to "Bootcamp" (returns 0x0000034 error screen) and while booting from both W10 and W8 media (has no effect).

Also, thank you for the help and quick responses. If I am able to recover this, it will have saved me immense headache.

Additionally, using F10 does bring up a command prompt when starting from the EFI icon in bootcamp. Could I use bcdedit to force Windows to display the Troubleshooting screen?

Run Diskpart and check if the drive letters have been assigned. If they are, then bcdedit can be used, but also bootrec.exe should be available to run a /rebuildBCD.

You should also be able to check the BCD logs.
