Q: Cannot upgrade to El Capitan. Now what?

Having recently purchased an iPhone 6S, and upgraded an iPad Air 2 and iPad Mini to iOS 9, I find of course that these devices will no longer talk to iTunes on my mid-2007 MacBook. Apparently I need to upgrade to iTunes 12.3 or better, but I cannot upgrade to El Capitan given the age of my machine. Do I really have to shell out $1,300-odd for a newer machine just to sync up my iOS devices? Or do I just draw a line under it and switch them all to iCloud backup, paying the extra storage every month? Is there any disadvantage to using iCloud backup over backing up to a hard-drive as I've always done? Are there any benefits? Any help gratefully appreciated.

There are benefits. If icloud backup works it does it automatically and you do not need to think, remember or do anything particular. The only visible downside is 99 cents a month. Does not mean that new computer will hurt and if you are really into it, just by Windows laptop and keep it for backup only. Remember that icloud does not backup your personal music or movies collection for example or any other licensed content not downloaded from iTunes store.
