Q: USB rapidly connect/disconnect

Hi,

I've seen threads similar to this before but none of them are conclusive and does not fit my issue right now.

I have

- MacBookPro Retina 15" mid 2015 (Yosemite 10.10.5)

- iPad Mini Retina (iOS 9.3.1) WiFi only.

- iPhone 6S Plus (iOS 9.3)

All my cables, chargers, power supplies, etc are from Apple.

When I connect iPhone 6S Plus to any of the USB on my MacBookPro, I have good connection and everything works just fine. I truly need this connection for high speed 3G/LTE connection for times when I'm on the road for business.

But, when I connect iPad Mini with the exact same cable, the connection is intermittent, as in "connects/disconnects cycling every second".

There are several threads suggesting reseting "Location and Privacy" settings and "Network" settings. None of these worked for me.

There are several threads suggesting turning of 3G / Wifi / bluetooth, etc. None of these worked for me.

There are several threads suggesting fully charging the iPad before connecting to the Mac. Didn't work either.

I have:

- Powercycled both devices several times.

- Restarted iOS by keeping Home and Power buttons until the Apple logo reappears on screen.

- Shut down, waited and restarted MBP.

- Tried different cables.

What upsets me the most is that the exact USB port and cable works for iPhone and not for iPad.

Planning on going to Apple Store to ask a "Genius" about this but this is not going to happen before next week.

I'd appreciate any ideas.

Thanks,

Ercin

    Hello there, rural.

It sounds like your iPad goes in and out of being recognized by your computer. The following Knowledge Base article offers up some great recommendations for troubleshooting:

If iTunes doesn‘t recognize your iPhone, iPad, or iPod

When iTunes on your computer doesn't recognize your connected device, use these steps. Try again after each step:

    1. Make sure that you have the latest version of iTunes that your system supports.
    2. Check that you have the latest software on your Mac or Windows PC.
    3. Make sure that your device is turned on.
    4. If you see a Trust this Computer alert, unlock your device and tap Trust. If the alert continues to appear, you might need to reset your lockdown folder.
    5. Unplug all USB accessories from your computer except for your device. Try each USB port to see if one works. Then try a different Apple USB cable.
    6. Restart your computer and iPhone, iPad, or iPod.
    7. To see if your device needs service, try another computer. If you have the same issue again, contact Apple Support.

For more help, finish the steps below for your Mac.

    {...}

    If you use a Mac

    1. Hold down the Option key, click the Apple menu, and choose System Information or System Report.
    2. Select USB from the list on the left.
    3. If you see your iPhone, iPad, or iPod under USB Device Tree, uninstall third-party security software. If not, contact Apple Support.

Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.

    Kind Regards.

    Sorry mate,

Been through all. Apple Support suggest me going to the closest service center which is over an hour away. I'll update once I do that.

    Thanks anyway.

I am experiencing the same rapid disconnect with my iPhone 6S on the latest version of iOS. Tonight I discovered that it only happens with iTunes open. When I close iTunes, it connects once and stays connected. I believe it is an iTunes (or OS X)problem and not a hardware (USB port/iPhone/Lightning Cable) issue. Apple is supposedly going to release an update to iTunes in the coming week or so to "safeguard" against a potential Apple Music bug, but hopefully it fixes this issue too.
